Ruim anderhalve eeuw was de VOC koloniaal bestuurder over het kustgebied van Sri Lanka - vanaf de verovering van Galle in 1640 tot aan de Engelse overname van de kolonie in 1796. De VOC was naar Ceylon gekomen om de koning van het binnenlandse rijk Kandy te helpen de Portugezen van het eiland te verjagen.
