*  CAPITOOL - Reisgids AustraliŽ, uitg.: Van Reemst (juli 2015), ISBN 9789000341443, flexibound, 588 blz., Ä38,99

2019), ISBN 9789493160200, paperback, 160 blz., formaat 220X170X15mm,  Ä22,50

*  THOMS, Shane - Abandoned Australia, uitg.: Jonglez Publishing (2019), ISBN 9782361953478, gebonden, ca.168 blz., Ä35,95
Verlaten en vervallen gebouwen in AustraliŽ, prachtig in beeld gebracht. Barren red deserts dotted with post-colonial ghost towns, dilapidated inner city factories, discarded country homesteads and a succession of dormant, soot-filled power stations are just a handful of the desolate, yet visually rich narratives that form part of the abandoned Australian landscape.
Digging beneath the sun-baked soil, Shane Thoms uncovers the modern ruins scattered over this arid continent and reveals a series of beautifully broken abodes hiding in the crevices of the Great Southern Land.
Whispering of both long-gone happy family moments and human darkness, of working lives and the everyday pursuits of living, these atmospheric scenes allow us to reconstruct the stories of the past. Prompting conversations about a growing, diverse country with a complicated history, these abandoned places both connect as well as contrast the past and the present and chronicle the hidden remnants of the evolving Australian story.
Shane Thoms is a photographer and photojournalist who studied at Monash University in Melbourne. He holds a Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication majoring in photography, screen and media. With a previous focus on the Japanese urban journey, his first book titled ĎHaikyo: The Modern Ruins of Japaní was released in 2017.
Shane Thomsís cross cultural photographic work has been featured on BBC, CNN, The Business Insider, Huffington Post and The Daily Mail.

*  BRYSON, Bill - Down Under, uitg.: Transworld Publishers (2001), ISBN 9781784161835, paperback, ca.432 blz., Ä14,90
'It was as if I had privately discovered life on another planet, or a parallel universe where life was at once recognizably similar but entirely different. I can't tell you how exciting it was. Insofar as I had accumulated my expectations of Australia at all in the intervening years, I had thought of it as a kind of alternative southern California, a place of constant sunshine and the cheerful vapidity of a beach lifestyle, but with a slightly British bent - a sort of Baywatch with cricket...'
Of course, what greeted Bill Bryson was something rather different. Australia is a country that exists on a vast scale. It is the world's sixth largest country and its largest island. It is the only island that is also a continent and the only continent that is also a country. It is the driest, flattest, hottest, most desiccated, infertile and climatically aggressive of all the inhabited continents and still it teems with life - a large proportion of it quite deadly. In fact, Australia has more things that can kill you in a very nasty way than anywhere else. This is a country where even the fluffiest of caterpillars can lay you out with a toxic nip, where seashells will not just sting you but actually sometimes go for you. If you are not stung or pronged to death in some unexpected manner, you may be fatally chomped by sharks or crocodiles, or carried helplessly out to sea by irresistable currents, or left to stagger to an unhappy death in the baking outback.
Ignoring such dangers - yet curiously obsessed by them - Bill Bryson journeyed to Australia and promptly fell in love with the country. And who can blame him? The people are cheerful, extrovert, quick-witted and unfailingly obliging; their cities are safe and clean and nearly always built on water; the food is excellent; the beer is cold and the sun nearly always shines. Life doesn't get much better than this.

Australia is the worldís largest island and its smallest continent. This is a country the size of the United States of America, spanning three time zones, yet with barely twenty-three million inhabitants. It is an ancient land, geologically one of the oldest on earth, and was first populated by the Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders. British colonialism in the 18th century bought with it its first waves of Anglo-Saxon settlers, while today Australia is very much an ethnic melting pot with large migrant populations hailing from India, China, the Philippines, Pakistan, Ireland and more.
Beliefs like being ďfair dinkumĒ (being honest, up-front, a person who keeps to his or her word) go back to the pioneering days, and is still valued today. And while Australians love for self-deprecating humour is also still going strong, traditional Ozzy concepts such as the "cultural cringe" and a social aversion to "Tall Poppies" have certainly changed as Australian society and its values have developed over recent decades.
This book sets out to provide more than just the nuts and bolts of where to stay, what to see, and how to travel. Culture Smart! guides are written for true travelers who want to understand the beliefs and attitudes of the people they meet: to learn from them, and to absorb the human dimension of the country. Culture Smart! Australia provides the necessary background information to enable you to put a human face on the country and its people; to communicate; to enjoy the culture; to make friends; to navigate its business culture, and to form lasting relationships.
