Modern Kazakhstan: Nomadic Routes from Caspian to Altaj, uitg.: Odyssea (5e ed.2018),
ISBN 9789622178793, paperback, 576 blz., geïll. met 330 foto's, €21,95
A country larger than Western Europe, Kazakhstan could fit all of the other former Central Asian Soviet member states within its borders with space to spare. Encompassed within this vast expanse is the Great Steppe, across which Genghis Khan's Mongol hordes galloped; to the south are the heights of the Tien Shan, through whose foothills Silk Road travelers journeyed; in the northeast the exquisite lakes and valleys of the Altai mountains lie waiting for adventurous souls to discover, and in the far west the Caspian Sea offers a Riviera setting for one of the world's most landlocked nations. With independence and the discovery of oil has come huge change, yet Kazakhstan remained one of the least-known of Asian countries until the Borat movie took the world by storm in 2006. Now this land of rich history, welcoming people and whirling bazaars is intent on sharing its wonders with a curious world.

HANSAGIMOVA, Dina -
Culture Smart! Kazakhstan: The Essential Guide to Customs & Culture, uitg.: Kuperard (okt.2013),
ISBN 9781857336818, paperback, 168 blz., €12,95
Kazakhstan, one of the largest countries in the world, was long hidden from the West—first under Russian tsarist rule and then behind the Soviet Iron Curtain. After gaining independence in 1991 the country continued to remain unnoticed among all the “stans” of Central Asia. Now, twenty years on, it has emerged as a modern state with far-reaching ambitions. Free-market reforms and rising oil exports have made Kazakhstan the richest country in the region. It has a vibrant economy, a stable business environment, and a friendly social scene.
There are many contrasts and extremes in Kazakhstan. You may find some of the apparent contradictions bewildering—not least, Asians speaking Russian, who follow a mixture of Muslim, Soviet, and earlier pagan traditions.
This book sets out to introduce you to this complex, unknown nation. It guides you through its history, traditions, and social values so that you will be able to identify the signs of its Soviet totalitarian heritage, of Russian cultural influence, and of the Asian mentality with its deep respect for power and hierarchy. It tells you about the Kazakhs at work, at home, at leisure, and in the street; it describes how they celebrate their holidays, and what they eat and drink. Whatever your reason for visiting, whether for business or travel, Culture Smart! Kazakhstan will help you make the most of your trip.

CHWEIZER, Manuel -
Birds of Central Asia, uitg.: Christopher Helm (okt.2012),
ISBN 9780713670387, paperback, 336 blz.,
UITVERKOCHT - niet meer leverbaar
Raffael Ayé, Manuel Schweizer and Tobias Roth are a trio of ornithologists from Switzerland, based at the University of Berne. They are experts on the birds of Central Asia, with considerable experience in the field. Among their many achievements was the discovery of the breeding grounds of Large-billed Reed Warbler in Tajikistan. Birds of Central Asia is the first field guide to include the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, along with neighbouring Afghanistan. This vast area includes a diverse variety of habitats, and the avifauna is similarly broad, from sandgrouse, ground jays and larks on the vast steppe and semi-desert to a broad range of raptors, and from woodland species such as warblers and nuthatches to a suite of montane species, such as snowcocks, accentors and snowfinches.
This book includes 141 high-quality plates covering every species (and all distinctive races) that occur in the region, along with concise text focusing on identification and accurate colour maps. Important introductory sections introduce the land and its birds.

Kauderwelsch Sprachführer Kasachisch: Wort für Wort, uitg.: Reise Know How Verlag Peter Rump (2e ed. 2010),
ISBN 9783894162832, pocketformaat,
